Civic Groups

There are a number of civic groups in Richmond. As information is submitted from each, it will appear on this page. We'll list who to contact as well. Some of the groups are Richmond Lion's Club, the American Legion, and the James and Drusilla Hendricks Camp of the International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

Service Day

Saturday, April 17, 2010 was a very busy day in Richmond. The National Scouting Service Day saw many of our local Scout Troops active in a variety of projects around town. Many laid sod in our city park; others swept the winter grit off the sidewalks. Some troops cleaned up around the Black & White Days grandstand, and more picked up trash along the highway. JP Erickson started his Eagle Scout project of digitizing the cemetery headstones. And the Lions Club restored the Bicentennial Garden by laying down new weed barrier, replanting the tulips, and installing a floodlight to illuminate the newly painted flagpole with its new flag and hardware.

The local chapter formed in October 1907 and has been active since then in remembering and honoring the names and achievements of Utah's earliest settlers. They stored their collection of written material and other artifacts in a small log cabin named the Relic Hall. In 1919, the DUP bought the old Relief Society Building (still standing on its original site on Main Street, just east of the Post Office) and on August 7 it became the new Relic Hall.

The DUP relocated to the old bishop's Storehouse in 1959. It is on State Street just south of the Post Office. Three exhibit rooms showcase many fine pieces of pioneer memorabilia. With no full-time staff, the DUP Relic Hall currently is open only be appointment and during Black and White Days and museum day in September.

At the recent museum day on September 26, a number of people stopped by to visit the museum. A team of horses and a wagon gave rides to folks; refreshments were served; and many reconnected with their roots.

The Richmond camp of the DUP cordially invites all ladies in the City to consider joining with us each month. We meet on the second Thursday of the month at 1:00 p.m. Normally we meet in the historic Relief Society Building just east of the Post Office; however, during the winter when snow makes access difficult, we meet at the City Office. While membership is designed for direct descendants of Utah pioneers (those who arrived before the joining of the rails in May of 1869), we have an Associates status for any other interested women. It is not a requirement to belong to any church. Our monthly meeting consists of lessons, presentation of histories, and just good, old-fashioned socializing (we have some very nice treats). For more information, please contact Ramona Turner at 258-3753.
